There are about 85 million Filipinos whose roots are traced back from its Malay-Polynesian origins having Chinese, Arabic, Indian, Spanish and American ancestry.
Known for the bayanihan or spirit of kinship and camaraderie (said to be taken from Malay ancestry), the Filipinos of today are likewise characterized by close family relations (said to have come from the Chinese); deep religiosity (from the Spaniards who introduced Christianity in the 16th century); and hospitability - a distinct trait for which Filipinos are most prominently known.
Filipino is the national language but there are some 111 dialects spoken by various cultural groups, Ethnicity aside, English remains widely used throughout the archipelago, mostly in government, business and commerce, making the country the third largest English-speaking community in the world.
There are three distinct seasons: warm and humid from March to May; wet from June to October; and cool and dry from November to February. The climate remains consistently cool in the highlands at roughly 10 degrees centigrade during the cold seasons, while lowland areas during the warm months are usually at more than 30 degrees.
